Tanglin Trust School is the first Nursery in Asia to achieve Curiosity
The Curiosity Approach is a modern-day approach to Early Years taking parts from Reggio, Steiner, Te Whariki and Montessori. The Curiosity Approach creates joyful, purposeful and enabling educational play spaces for children.
‘Natural resources’, recycled materials and authentic materials are used in practical and aesthetically pleasing ways.
Using a toolkit consisting of six modules, the Approach supports an increased use of ‘natural materials’, recycled materials and ‘authentic resources’ into the learning environment, in a practical and aesthetically pleasing way. The use of colour, lighting and furniture is carefully considered, and classrooms are organised to provide children with greater independence and access to resources.
The innate skills of children are developed.
The teachers are at the forefront of educational best practice and the Curiosity Approach provided the Nursery with an opportunity to create an even more innovative approach to learning, building upon the expertise of its team and current practice.
Outdoor areas are a magical hive of activity where children can eagerly explore.
Having embarked on this 18-month journey, the Nursery have created a culture of curiosity that is deeply embedded within its setting. The Nursery has transformed into an even calmer and more tranquil learning environment with cosy, comfortable play spaces for its youngest learners. The Nursery team’s rigorous planning and reflection creates a carefully inspired learning environment where young, inquisitive minds are nurtured, imagination is captured, and the innate skills of children: curiosity, awe and wonder, are developed.
On the impact of the Approach on the Nursery children, Paula Craigie, Head of Infant School said: "Children’s level of independence to access and choose resources has increased and they are more aware of safety and respect when using real objects including ceramic tea sets and captivating artefacts. Their inquisitive minds and imagination are captured, and deep level thinking and communication and social skills developed. Each day, our classrooms and outdoor areas are a magical hive of activity where children can eagerly explore."
Victoria Thomas, Head of Nursery said: "The children’s higher level of engagement and greater ownership of learning really does provide a solid foundation as they embark on their learning journey at Tanglin."
