Proper dental care is very important in maintaining a person’s overall health.  Sadly, oral hygiene is often taken for granted by countless many.  People usually put off dental hygiene either because they are too lazy to take care of their teeth, or they simply lack the necessary information on how to take care of them.  It is also possible that people who lack the knowledge on proper oral hygiene might even be unaware of the complications and difficulties that may arise from neglecting to provide proper dental care for oneself.

People should know that providing dental care to one’s self is important to health.  Providing regular dental care to one’s self will prevent the destruction of his or her set of teeth. When food is left on the teeth and left unattended, bacteria will be allowed to grow and eventually destroy the teeth.  Tooth decay will occur.  Tooth decay is an irreversible infection caused by bacteria that lodge onto and attack the teeth.  Such an infection will result into permanent destruction of the teeth or extraction of the teeth affected by infection.  This is the reason why it is highly recommended to brush your teeth at least three times a day, after meals and before going to sleep.

It is important that people should know how to regularly provide dental care to their teeth.  Otherwise, it will lead to various complications and may even give rise to specific diseases not only affecting the mouth and teeth. The oral cavity is a good port of entry for bacteria that have already affected the mouth and teeth.  The bacteria may travel to the throat, the lower respiratory tract, and even the heart, and cause several infections that may prove fatal to the person.

Improper dental care will also affect our social relations with others especially when food or bacteria is left on the teeth and cause infection.  An unpleasant odor may accompany infection of the teeth.  Such a foul odor will be very unpleasant to other people.

It is indeed quite important to take care of our teeth.  Neglecting to take care of our teeth and mouth will only lead to irreversible and permanent problems.
