SINGAPORE, Oct. 28, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Yokogawa Engineering Asia ("Yokogawa") has been awarded S$4.2 million under the Singapore Energy Market Authority’s (EMA) Energy Grid 3.0 Grant Call, as a part of EMA’s Future Grid Capabilities Roadmap.   As Singapore transitions towards increased renewables and lower-carbon energy systems, the project will explore how industrial and distributed energy assets can support enhanced stability, decarbonization and economic efficiency of the next-generation electricity grid, while creating new opportunities for participating industrial assets. The Advanced Energy and Decarbonisation Office (AEDO), a national platform hosted by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), serves as the implementing agency responsible for administering the grant, following the transfer of grant administration responsibilities from EMA on 1 August 2026. This award for the project titled ‘Distributed Inertia Provision from Conventional and Inverter Interfaced Assets’ marks a significant milestone for Yokogawa’s Sustainability Incubation Hub, launched in 2024 in Singapore, to accelerate the development and co-innovation of climate-tech solutions. This pioneering demonstration at a waste-to-energy plant for grid stability services in Singapore will be led by Yokogawa, leveraging its advanced sensing and control capabilities in collaboration with partners from the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), and Rexus Bioenergy Pte Ltd (RExus). Project pilot site at RExus’s 9.9 MW waste-to-energy plant for renewable electricity generation "Addressing Singapore’s energy challenges requires close collaboration between industry and the research community to develop solutions that can be deployed in real-world settings. Through public R&D funding, we aim to catalyze such partnerships that translate promising technologies into practical applications. Industry-led collaborations such as Yokogawa’s project bring together complementary expertise to accelerate energy innovation, strengthen Singapore’s R&D capabilities, and support our longer-term decarbonization goals," said John Chen, Executive Director, AEDO. Supporting Singapore’s Net-Zero Target and Growing Electricity Demand The power industry plays a key role in achieving Singapore’s net-zero carbon emissions target by 2050, as it currently accounts for about 40% of the country’s emissions. As the energy landscape evolves with the growing adoption of distributed energy resources, the traditional model of centrally managed power generation is transforming into a more intelligent, decentralized, and interconnected energy ecosystem. Recognizing this shift, EMA’s Future Grid Capabilities Roadmap sets the direction for advancing the grid through research, pilot projects, and deployment initiatives. "As Singapore integrates more renewable energy into our power system, developing new solutions to maintain grid stability will become increasingly important. The Energy Grid 3.0 Grant Call supports research and innovation to address such emerging challenges. We welcome industry efforts to develop innovative solutions that could help strengthen Singapore’s grid resilience as it evolves," said Eugene Toh, Assistant Chief Executive (Energy Technologies) of EMA. Yokogawa will address these national priorities by taking the lead to explore how industrial facilities can evolve beyond their traditional role as energy consumers to become active participants in maintaining grid reliability and stability. The project will study how existing industrial sites, such as process manufacturing plants, and modern infrastructure, including data centers, can provide critical grid support services while continuing to fulfill their primary operational objectives. From Sustainability Innovation to Real-World Deployment By combining cutting-edge research from NUS and SIT with Yokogawa’s operational expertise, the consortium aims to accelerate the transition of future-grid concepts from laboratory research into real-world enterprise deployments at sites such as RExus’s waste-to-energy plant. The project will integrate the Convera™ Power Plant Controller (PPC) by BaxEnergy, A Yokogawa Company, with Yokogawa’s OpreX Collaborative Information Server (CI Server). The Convera™ PPC enables real-time orchestration across multiple technologies and energy resources, while the CI Server provides a digital backbone that aggregates operational data across multiple systems in a single operating environment. As a unified system, these technologies will enhance advanced decision-making, situational awareness and future autonomous grid services. Digital Foundations for Grid 3.0 As Singapore advances towards a lower-carbon and increasingly electrified future, projects such as Energy Grid 3.0 will play an important role in demonstrating new operating models and paving the way for scalable solutions across the energy ecosystem. "The vision of Yokogawa’s Sustainability Incubation Hub is to bridge innovation and implementation by bringing together industry, academia, and public-sector partners to address complex sustainability challenges. The Energy Grid 3.0 project is a direct embodiment of that vision and reflects Yokogawa’s commitment to supporting customers through their energy transition journey. Together with our partners, we aim not only to create a more resilient, sustainable solution for Singapore’s future energy system but also scalable solutions for the wider Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Taiwan region," said Chay Kin Wah, President and CEO of Yokogawa Engineering Asia.
